Electoral issues poll

January 12, 2018

Research NZ found:

  • 56% support showing ID in order to vote and 40% opposed
  • 34% support compulsory voting and 59% opposed
  • 37% are satisfied with MMP and 37% dissatisfied
  • 47% agree MMP results in a more representative Government and 32% disagree
  • 28% agree MMP Governments are less effective than FPP Governments and 52% disagree
  • 47% agree it is not a concern the largest party did not form Government and 42% disagree
  • 41% would vote to retain the Maori seats and 44% would vote to abolish them

Medical Cannabis poll

November 21, 2017

ResearchNZ polled 500 people on legalising cannabis-based products for medicinal purposes. They found:

  • 77% support
  • 16% opposed

ResearchNZ polled 500 people on euthanasia:

Suppose a person has a painful, incurable disease. Do you think that doctors should be allowed by law to end the patient’s life, if the patient requests it?

  • Yes 65% (-2% from July 2015)
  • No 22% (-2%)
  • Don’t Know 13% (+4%)

Still thinking of that person with a painful, incurable disease, do you think that someone else, such as a close relative, should be allowed by law to help end the patient’s life, if the patient requests it?

  • Yes 43% (-1%)
  • No 46% (-2%)
  • Don’t Know 11% (+3%)

NZ Flag September 2015

ResearchNZ found:

  • 28% want a new flag
  • 61% do not
  • 43% support adding Red Peak to the referendum, 45% do not
  • The most popular alternative designs are Black, white and blue silver fern 31%, red white and blue silver fern 23%, Red Peak 22%, Koru 5%, black and white fern 1%

Syrian refugees

October 16, 2015

Research NZ found:

  • 61% agree with Government decision to allow 750 Syrian refugees in, including 600 on top of quota
  • 28% disagree
  • 28% think the extra number of 600 is about right, 36% say it should be more and 23% less

Gender Equality poll

October 2, 2015

 

Research NZ surveyed 500 New Zealanders on gender equality. Their findings:

  • In health system 14% say women treated more favourably, 9% men and 72% equal
  • In education system 18% say women treated more favourably, 10% men and 68% equal
  • In justice system 19% say women treated more favourably, 10% men and 59% equal
  • In social settings 10% say women treated more favourably, 26% men and 57% equal
  • In government 11% say women treated more favourably, 25% men and 54% equal
  • In workplaces 4% say women treated more favourably, 45% men and 46% equal
  • In business 2% say women treated more favourably, 62% men and 32% equal

Overall 9% of NZers saying they have been personally disadvantaged because of their gender.

55% say NZ has better gender equality than other Western countries, 9% say worse and 29% the same.

Trust in Occupations

June 9, 2015

Research NZ asked 500 NZers to rate how much they trusted 10 occupations on a 0 to 10 basis. The proportions who gave a 7 or higher were:

  1. Fire Service 93% (-4%)
  2. Ambulance Service 92% (-4%)
  3. Doctors and nurses 87% (-4%)
  4. Police 75% (-9%)
  5. School teachers 75% (-6%)
  6. Government employees 44% (+2%)
  7. Lawyers 43% (-4%)
  8. Local councillors 31% (+1%)
  9. MPs 25% (+7%)
  10. Journalists 23% (nc)

The change from 2013 is in brackets

Research NZ surveyed 501 people:

  • 74% support doctors being allowed to end a patient’s life if they request it and have a painful incurable disease
  • 20% opposed to doctors being allowed to end a patient’s life if they request it and have a painful incurable disease
  • 51% support a close relative being allowed to end a patient’s life if they request it and have a painful incurable disease
  • 41% opposed to a close relative being allowed to end a patient’s life if they request it and have a painful incurable disease

GCSB powers poll

August 15, 2013

Research NZ asked 500 New Zealanders:

In the past the Government Communication Security Bureau, the GCSB, has not been permitted to monitor New Zealand residents. A law comes into force shortly that will allow the GCSB to monitor New Zealand residents as well as non-residents.

Are you in favour or not in favour of the GCSB being allowed to do this?

The results were:

  • 36% in favour
  • 52% not in favour

Trust in MPs

ResearchNZ asked 1,000 NZers to rate on a 0 to 10 scale if they trusted certain professions. The percentages who gave an eight or higher was:

  • Ambulance Service 93%
  • Fire Service 91%
  • Doctors and nurses 81%
  • Police 70%
  • Teachers 61%
  • Lawyers 29%
  • People who work for Govt 22%
  • Local Councillors 14%
  • Journalists 11%
  • MPs 9%
